The 50/30/20 Budget, Adapted for Real Life

A simple framework, and the changes you'll need for high-cost cities.

The original rule

Elizabeth Warren's 50/30/20 rule: 50% of after-tax income to needs, 30% to wants, 20% to savings and debt payoff.

Where it breaks

In cities where rent is 40% of take-home, the ratio must bend. A workable adaptation is 60/20/20 while you're renting, then rebalance once housing stabilizes.

Automating it

Split your paycheck into three accounts on payday. Anything you don't see, you don't spend.

Debt is savings

Paying down 22% credit card debt is a guaranteed 22% return. Treat it as savings for the "20" bucket.
